When training for any sport, a high-performance smart watch is a key part of your kit.  It needs to be lightweight, function for long periods between charges, and be able to give you key information about your training session, as well as your health stats.

The Garmin 245 advocates it’s sleek lightweight design, durable materials, incident detection function, long battery life, running dynamics and workout training programs.

On the other hand, with its’s nylon wristband, the Coros Pace 2 markets itself as the lightest weight GPS watch available (at the time of launch), a simple user experience and long battery life.

Key features of both the Garmin Forerunner 245 and the Corsos Pace 2 watches share are that they both hold their charge for long periods of time and are both very lightweight on your wrist.

So, let's look at these features (and more) in detail to see how they really compare.

What Is The Difference Between Garmin 245 and Coros Pace 2 Watches?

What Is The Difference In Batteries?

The Garmin’s battery can last for 24 hours in GPS mode, and 7 whole days in smartwatch mode, whereas in comparison, the Coros Pace 2 battery will last a huge 60 hours in GPS mode and a whopping 20 days in smartwatch mode.

There is obviously a big difference between the two watches in terms of battery life – although I’m guessing the extra functions that the Garmin has over the Coros Pace 2, will be part of the reason for this.  (These extra functions will be covered later).

What Is The Difference In Weight?

When you compare these watches (with a silicone wristband fitted) their weights are very similar, with the Garmin weighing in at 38.5g and the Coros Pace weighing 35g – 36g.

However, with the optional nylon wristband fitted, the Coros Pace 2 is nearly 10g lighter at

29g-30g.  There are pros and cons of both the nylon and the silicone wrist bands.  The advantages of the silicone being that it is easier to wash and doesn’t start to smell as quickly due to sweat.

This sweat / dirt absorbing aspect of the nylon band is obviously the negative, however users have reported that they wash easily.  It is also said that the nylon band ensures a better, closer fit on the wrist, enhancing the accuracy of measurements that the watch takes.

What Is The Choice Of Colours?

The Garmin Forerunner 245 comes with an option of white, black or turquoise silicone wristbands, while the watch face itself only comes in black.

The Coros Pace 2, give the option of two band materials: silicone in either white, blue steel or navy blue or nylon in either white or navy blue.  Again, the only option for the watch face is black.

What Is The Difference In Price?

The standard Garmin Forerunner 245 is £209.99, and if you want the music version it is £299.99, while the Coros Pace 2 (with either the silicone or nylon wrist band) is £179.00.

Neither watch is cheap, but that said, runners looking for all the functionality that these watches pack, wouldn’t expect much change from £200.

It is just whether you deem having the music feature is worth spending another £90.00, and that is personal choice.

Conclusion

  • Coros Pace 2 is between £30.00 - £120.00 cheaper than the Garmin Forerunner 245.
  • The Garmin has more training features such as running dynamic monitor, training status / training history, training effect and training load.
  • The Coros Pace 2 is lighter in weight, with the nylon wristband fitted.
  • The Coros Pace 2 has a longer battery life.
  • The Garmin has an incident detection function whereas the Coros Pace 2 doesn’t.
  • If music is very important to you, the Coros Pace 2 isn’t for you.

Although there is a significant price difference, with all things considered you do get a lot more features with the Garmin, so having to spend the extra is justified for many.

However, if you don’t need all the bells and whistles and you’re not bothered about having the music function, the Coros Pace is probably the watch for you.
