Hi, It’s Chris again, I recently reviewed the Asics S4+ Yogiri. If you didn’t catch that review then here is a bit about me….. I’m a 40 year old bloke from Essex who started running a couple of years ago after being gently harassed into it by a mate. I now run 3 to 4 times a week and love it!! Although, let’s be honest, there are definitely moments of questioning life choices mid 10k. Still, I’d call myself a runner these days, currently focusing on a 50 miler in the peaks in August.
I’ve run in a fair few shoes over the past couple of years, carbon-plated racers, stability/recovery shoes and daily trainers that try to do it all, but every now and then, a shoe lands that just works. For me, that’s the ASICS Superblast 2.
From the first run, I knew this one was different. It’s not just a good shoe, it’s the shoe. Track, road, trail, strides, steady runs, recovery plods… it’s handled the lot with style and comfort. Could this be the one shoe to rule them all.
ASICS SUPERBLAST 2
Out of the box, the Superblast 2 has a premium feel without screaming for attention. It’s suitable style nods to those that know. Clean lines, lightweight feel, and that marshmallowy midsole just begging to be taken out to log some miles.
From the moment I slipped them on they have been perfect. No hotspots, no heel rub, no messing about with lace tension. Just a plush, confident fit straight away. The upper is breathable without being flimsy, the heel cup is nicely padded with zero slippage and the tongue sits well and doesn’t move around too much.
LET'S GET INTO THE DETAILS
STACK HEIGHT
This shoe is tall. With 45.5mm of cushioning at the heel and 37.5mm at the forefoot, the Superblast 2 sits right at the edge of what’s technically allowed in competition, however at no point does it feel like you are tottering on stilts, its stable and comfy.
DROP
The 8mm heel-to-toe drop feels pretty standard these day and, for me at least, hits a sweet spot. There’s enough lift at the heel to take pressure off the calves during easy and steady runs, but it’s not so aggressive that it interferes with your natural stride. It makes for a very smooth, roll through feel, ideal for cruising along at various paces.
WEIGHT
For a max-cushioned Super trainer, the Superblast 2 is lighter than you’d expect. My pair in a UK 12 comes in at around 295 grams, they don’t feel heavy or clunky on the foot. It’s light enough to pick up the pace when needed, but with the underfoot comfort of a daily trainer.
MIDSOLE
FF TURBO+ AND FF BLAST+ (NO CARBON PLATE)

The Superblast 2 features a dual-layer midsole combining ASICS top tier softer and more energetic FF Turbo+ foam on top (the same foam used in their Metaspeed racers), and a slightly firmer FF Blast+ ECO underneath for stability and structure.
This delivers a plush yet responsive ride, offering a balance between cushioning and energy return. Notably, the Superblast 2 achieves this without incorporating a carbon plate, which is often used in performance shoes to enhance propulsion.
The absence of a carbon plate contributes to a more natural and versatile running experience. While carbon plates can provide a snappy toe-off, they can sometimes make the shoe feel stiff, which isn’t ideal for all runners or run types. By ditching the plate, the Superblast 2 maintains flexibility, making it suitable for a variety of paces and distances.
Some runners may find that at very fast paces, such as 5K race efforts, the shoe doesn’t provide the same level of propulsion as plated racing shoes. Nonetheless, for most training scenarios, the Superblast 2 offers a comfortable and responsive ride without the rigidity that can come with carbon plates.
OUTSOLE
ASICSGRIP / AHAR+ RUBBER WITH EXPOSED FOAM

The grip is taken care of by patches of AHAR+ rubber on the forefoot and heel that is durable, grippy, and hard-wearing. Through the midfoot, you’ve got exposed foam, which helps keep the weight down.
After a decent handful of miles on road, track and trail it’s held up brilliantly, with no major wear or damage. Plus, the lack of deep cutouts means you’re not collecting every pebble on the path.
UPPER
ENGINEERD WOVEN MESH

The upper is a lightweight engineered mesh that balances breathability with structure. It’s not paper-thin, like on the Metaspeed + series but it’s airy enough for warm runs and doesn’t hold moisture. The fit feels dialled in, snug through the midfoot and heel, with a bit of room up front. There’s a nice bit of stretch to it too, so it doesn’t feel restrictive when your feet swell on longer runs. I have pretty narrow feet and the fit is great.
TONGUE: THIN, SEMI-GUSSETED
ASICS have gone with a thin, partially padded, partially gusseted tongue here. It stays in place and doesn’t bunch or slide around mid-run or when getting the shoe on, a big win in my book.
It’s not overly padded, but does have some padding in the upper part, so if you lace up to the top eyelet like I do, there is zero discomfort or pinching. It’s an improvement from the fiddly tongues in some of their race shoes.
FIT
True to size, this shoe fits exactly as you’d hope. I went with my usual size and had zero issues, no heel slip, no toe pinch, no weird pressure points.
The forefoot gives your toes just the right amount of breathing room without feeling sloppy. It’s a goldilocks fit: just right for long miles and hard efforts alike.
HEEL

The heel is well-cushioned and locks down nicely, I am prone to blisters on my achilles and had no issues in the Superblasts.
There is a quality heel tab that can be used to get the shoe on which also has some reflective writing on to aid visibility in low light.
PERFORMANCE
This is where the Superblast 2 shines. The dual-layer midsole is soft but stable, bouncy but controlled. It’s genuinely fun to run in, and when I walk out the door in them it put s smile on my face.
Whether I’m cruising through an easy 10k or pushing through a tempo session, the shoe feels lively underfoot without any instability or harshness.
Ive worn this shoe for easy runs, long runs, trail runs, hill efforts and a track session with my club.
It really was great in all of the above.
Where it does fall short is at 5k race pace. The track session I used them for started with 2.4k at threshold pace and they were fantastic. The session then moved into 3 x 800m at 5k pace and this is where they struggled.
The midsole started to feel just a bit too soft, and you don’t get that sharp, snappy response you’d want for all-out efforts. I found myself working harder to maintain pace and not getting the pop I might from a carbon plated racer.
That said, this shoe wasn’t built for chasing PBs over 5k, it was built for doing everything else.
CONCLUSION
The ASICS Superblast 2 isn’t just a great shoe, it’s the best all rounder I’ve worn. It nails the balance between comfort and responsiveness, and it’s versatile enough to cover 90% of my weekly training without compromise.
Sure, it’s not built for those 5 MAX efforts, but for everything else, it’s a joy.
Price wise, its currently sitting at £200 (thats if you can even get a pair), so its not a “cheap” trainer but for the mileage, comfort, and versatility you get, I’d say it’s worth every penny.
The ASICS Superblast 2 is a standout shoe. While it’s not a pure racer for 5k PB attempts, for everything else, it’s as close to “one shoe to rule them all” as you’ll get in 2025.
