The Hoka Skyward X is a highly cushioned road running shoe that offers a unique blend of comfort and performance.

As the successor to the Bondi X, this trainer aims to provide a plush ride with a touch of propulsion for those easy-paced and long runs.

THE HEEL

The Skyward X boasts an impressive 48mm stack height in the heel for men (46mm for women), which is quite substantial even by Hoka's standards.

This generous cushioning provides excellent shock absorption, particularly beneficial for heel strikers.

The shoe incorporates Hoka's signature bucket seat design, which cradles the foot. This may feel a little different to if your normal trainers if your not used to Hoka's trainers but I really like and works well for me.

THE UPPERS

The Skyward X features a well-constructed upper that contributes to the shoe's overall quality and durability.

I have read other reviews that suggest the fit is notably narrow, consistent with many Hoka models, which may require sizing up for some runners but I have not found this and it feels perfectly.

The upper provides a secure fit, though some users may need to adjust the lacing for optimal heel lockdown.

THE OUTSOLE

The outsole of the Skyward X takes inspiration from the Bondi 8, featuring extensive rubber coverage, especially on the outer lateral heel and medial side of the forefoot.

This design enhances durability and provides good grip, even on wet surfaces.

I am about 50 miles in so far and I have not noticed any wear on the outsole at all.

THE MIDSOLE

The midsole is where the Skyward X truly shines. It combines a layer of soft, resilient PEBA foam closest to the foot with a super-critical EVA frame underneath.

This combination, along with a convex carbon fibre plate, creates a spring-loaded sensation that makes running feel effortless, particularly during long runs.

The shoe's MetaRocker design really surprises you with a smooth, stable ride despite the high stack height.

I had previously been really glowing of the Adidas Prime X Strung 2 and they had become my go to trainers for long and easy runs, but the Hoka Skyward X is more stable and comfortable I have been finding myself picking these up instead.

HOW DO THEY FIT?

The Hoka Skyward X delivers a noticeably bouncy, energetic ride that makes running feel effortless, particularly on long runs. The shoe performs best during easy-paced runs, providing a plush and smooth experience.

I sometimes use these for tempo runs just because of the comfort they bring but they are a little harder to bring some pace as the midsole is more comfort over responsive.

HOW MUCH DO THEY WEIGH?

Despite its substantial cushioning, the Skyward X manages to keep its weight relatively reasonable. My men's version weighs 320g in a UK size 9.

Although this is heavier than many modern trainers, the shoe's efficient design makes it feel lighter during runs, especially at easier paces.

IS IT A FULL CARBON PLATE?

The Hoka Skyward X features a unique H-shaped carbon plate rather than a full carbon plate.

This design includes two prongs running parallel in the shoe, which stabilise the soft foam layers in the midsole and maintain the rocker shape. It provides propulsion by enhancing the gait cycle, while also offering support under the heel with a flared design.

This innovative plate is tailored for slower paces, helping heel strikers maintain an upright posture and ensuring a light, responsive feel during runs.

HOW MUCH DO THEY COST?

In the UK, the Hoka Skyward X is priced £185 for a pair. This is considerably cheaper than the Adidas Prime X 2 Strung, which are £220.

CONCLUSION

The Hoka Skyward X is an impressive trainer for those seeking maximum cushioning with a touch of responsiveness. It excels in easy-paced and long runs, offering a plush ride that can help reduce fatigue.

However, its high stack height may not suit everyone, particularly for faster-paced workouts or races.

For runners who prioritise comfort and cushioning in their daily trainers, the Skyward X is certainly worth considering.

WOULD I RECOMMEND THEM?

Yes. These have fast become my go to trainers for most of my runs and strongly considering getting the Hoka Mach X 2 or Hoka Cielo X1 to pair with them.
