I’m Vicky! I’ve been running consistently for about 8 years, with the last 5 spent training and racing competitively as part of a club. I’m now getting ready to train for a sub 3 hour marathon.

While I enjoy all kinds of running, marathons are the distance that brings me the most satisfaction (and often ends with me crying at the finish line).

Alongside my friend Justine, I run the Instagram account @girlsreallyrun, where we share our training, races, reviews and everything in between.

NIKE STREAKFLY 2

Nike describes the Streakfly 2 as a lightweight, road racing shoe designed for shorter distances, between 1 mile and 10K.

They feature their responsive ZoomX foam paired with a full-length carbon-fibre Flyplate, which aims to give you a propulsive, snappy experience that keeps you feeling fast.

INITIAL THOUGHTS

I was initially hesitant to wear carbon plated trainers for training, especially since one of the things I loved most about the original Nike Streakfly was how fast and responsive they felt without a carbon plate.

There was something refreshing about a lightweight shoe that didn’t rely on carbon to deliver speed. I also thought that Nike’s purpose of the streakflys was to have a fast trainer without the plate, so I struggled to understand the purpose behind them and why you wouldn’t pay a bit extra and get the vapours which are more versatile.

However, I can’t deny how much I’ve come to love the Streakfly 2. I’ve been surprised at how much more I can push myself in sessions and that’s translated to a noticeable boost in confidence on race day.

I think Nike have made a trainer that is less versatile so it can dominate that distance (i.e. 5 and 10k), rather than be a ‘jack of all trades’ type trainer.

THE HEEL

The Streakfly 2 features an internal padded heel that wraps securely around the back of the foot.

This design helps reduce heel slippage and adds a bit of extra comfort, especially important for someone like me who has sensitive feet and is prone to blisters.

These trainers felt great right from the first run, with no rubbing or discomfort.

THE UPPER

The upper is made of an ultra-light, breathable mesh that’s even thinner and more flexible than the original Streakfly.

While the fabric itself doesn’t stretch much, the lacing system (which connects to the upper via string-like loops) allows a bit of give, so you can get a snug fit without pressure.

The overall fit is secure, and they almost feel like a spike trainer which are ideal if you’re after fast times.

THE OUTSOLE

The outsole has a sticky, web like rubber grip that’s mostly focused on the forefoot. This helps reduce weight while still giving solid grip.

I haven’t worn them in wet conditions yet, but they provide good traction on dry pavement and track surfaces, and I anticipate this would follow suit in wet conditions.

However, the outsole coverage is minimal at the heel, I do think they’re more suited for midfoot or forefoot strikers. If that’s your natural gait, you’ll get the most out of the design and help protect the exposed ZoomX foam from early wear and tear.

My foot strike changes based on how tired I am so there are times when I heel strike, and I think that’ll impact how long they last.

THE MIDSOLE

Nike lists the heel to toe drop at 4mm; however, the trainer feels flatter, almost like a negative drop.

It uses soft ZoomX foam in the forefoot and a firmer foam closer to the heel, creating a firm but responsive underfoot feel.

The trainers massively encourage a forward-leaning stride and suit runners who land more on their midfoot or toes.

As mentioned previously, I don’t think they’re the best for heel strikers as the way they’re designed may make them feel a bit unstable and lack in support, particularly over longer efforts.

HOW DO THEY FIT

nike streakfly 2 fit

I usually wear a size 6 in running shoes, but found the Streakfly 2 came up a bit small, especially in the toe box. I went up half a size to a 6.5 and that made all the difference.

Once I had the right size, the fit was snug and secure, and I had no issues with rubbing, blisters or hotspots.

However, it is quite narrow toe box which might not suit everyone, especially if you have wider feet. For me, once the size was adjusted, they were perfect and genuinely comfortable straight from the box.

HOW MUCH DO THEY WEIGH

These weigh approx. 127g for my size 6.5, which is probably the lightest shoes I own.

That weightlessness adds to the feeling of speed, especially during fast training sessions.

I think they’re one of those shoes that makes you feel fast when you put them on.

PRICE

The Streakfly 2 retails for £164.99 in the UK and $180 in the USA, which is reasonable for a carbon plated shoe.

When you consider its performance, versatility for short distance training and racing and build quality, I think they offer great value especially compared to other super shoes on the market that push well past £200/$200.

CONCLUSION

My friend described the Streakfly 2s as ‘spikes on steroids’ and honestly, I can’t think of how else to describe them so perfectly.

Once I had the right size, they were comfortable straight from the box and honestly, I do love them. They’re lightweight, responsive, and give you that sharp feeling you want for racing. I’ve run in a few carbon trainers, but these do stand out when it comes to 5K and 10K speed and I’d be more inclined to wear these over the vapours for these distances.

However, I wouldn’t recommend them for anything over 10K. When I tried them on longer sessions (around 9–10 miles with warmup and cooldown included), my calves felt it.

They also feel quite uncomfortable on easy miles and the bits of walking in-between due to how much they push you on your toes and the lack of support around the heel area.

In my opinion, they’re great for race pace and speed work, but not designed for easy miles or high mileage days. Moving forward I’ll probably do my warmup and cool downs in a different trainer.

WOULD I RECOMMEND THEM?

Definitely. These trainers have become a key part of my rotation for speed sessions and shorter races.

They’re not the most versatile shoe for longer runs or easy miles, but when it comes to racing, or track nights they deliver. They’re comfortable and fast to run in.
