Nike promote the Vomero Plus as a max cushion daily trainer, created to deliver an ultra comfortable yet responsive ride through a towering stack of ZoomX foam. It’s designed to protect the legs over everyday miles while still feeling light, smooth and energetic underfoot.

I’m currently training for a sub 3 hour marathon and running around 45 to 50 miles per week. Most weeks include long runs, steady mileage and some faster efforts, so I need a shoe that can handle high volume without leaving my legs feeling beaten up.

The Vomero Plus has quickly become one of my main training shoes for exactly that reason.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

I’ll be honest, I usually care far more about performance than looks. But the particle colourway is lush. I feel like it’s rare to find a shoe that looks stylish while also being good to run in.

Nike have released the Vomero Plus in a wide range of colourways, from classic black and white to bold pinks, blues and greens. There are also “Nike by You” options if you like to customise your trainer and even a pair with Swarovski® Crystals (slightly higher price tag).

FIT AND COMFORT

These fit true to size (I’m a women’s 6) with a secure lace system that stays tight throughout the run. The toe box is roomy enough for natural movement and swelling on long runs, without feeling sloppy.

After a few runs, they really began to mould to my feet. No pressure points, no hot spots and no lingering soreness.

THE HEEL

The heel is one of the standout features of the Vomero Plus. Despite the high 45mm stack height, they feel stable and secure without being restrictive. The structured heel counter locks the foot in place and prevents any slipping, even late into long runs when my form naturally starts to fade.

For a neutral shoe with this level of cushioning, rear foot stability is excellent, something that becomes essential when you’re logging high weekly mileage and running on tired legs.

INSIDE

The padded tongue, lining and heel collar create a plush, premium feel without making the shoe feel bulky. The internal fit is smooth and irritation free, this is more prominent once broken in, in that they got more comfortable with each wear. Exactly what you want when spending hours on the road.

After the first few runs, the comfort really came into its own. No pressure points, no hot spots, and no lingering soreness after long efforts.

THE UPPERS

The engineered mesh upper is soft, breathable and flexible. It adapts well to foot shape and provides a secure fit while still allowing natural movement in the forefoot.

Micro perforations improve airflow and help keep feet cool on longer runs. Combined with the MR-10 last, traditional lacing system and webbed lace loops, the upper delivers a consistent, locked in feel that inspires confidence at marathon training paces.

The trainer also has some reflective details, which are a small but valuable bonus for early morning and evening runs.

THE OUTSOLE

nike vomero plus outsole

The durable rubber waffle outsole provides reliable grip on both dry and wet roads. I ran in heavy rain on slippery pavements and never felt unsure underfoot. Although designed as a road shoe, they perform surprisingly well on light trails and gravel paths. It only struggles on very wet, muddy fields, which is fair for a high stack road trainer.

The outsole has an excellent balance between durability and weight, offering confidence without making the shoe feel heavy.

THE MIDSOLE

In my opinion, this is where the Vomero Plus truly shines. The trainer has a full length ZoomX foam midsole which delivers superb energy return while remaining soft and protective.

Each stride feels smooth and slightly springy, with a natural forward roll thanks to the rocker shape. Runs genuinely feel easier, almost in a carbon trainer manner, especially as the miles add up.

Despite the tall stack, the wider platform and raised sidewalls create a stable base. You get maximum cushioning without the unstable, wobbly sensation that some high stack shoes can suffer from.

The result is a shoe that protects the legs, reduces fatigue and still encourages you to run a little faster than planned.

HOW MUCH DO THEY WEIGH?

In a women’s size 6, they weigh approximately 252g. I thought this was quite light for a max cushion shoe with a 45mm stack height and explains why they feel far nimbler than they look on the foot.

They may appear bulky, but once you’re moving, they feel anything but.

DO THEY HAVE A CARBON PLATE?

No. However, they still feel surprisingly propulsive, likely due to the ZoomX foam and rocker geometry. They won’t replace a carbon plated race shoe, but they comfortably handle faster paces when needed.

COST

Positioned as a premium daily trainer, the Vomero Plus sits at the higher end of the market. However, the build quality, durability and versatility make them a worthwhile investment, particularly for high mileage runners.

They usually retail at £154.99 on the Nike website, however Nike currently have these on sale at £108.49.

HOW WOULD I USE THEM?

I originally expected to use these purely for easy and recovery runs, but they’ve proven to be far more versatile.

I now use them for:

  • Long runs
  • Recovery runs
  • Steady aerobic mileage
  • Long runs with threshold efforts
  • High mileage marathon training blocks

They wouldn’t be my first choice for track intervals or pure speed sessions, but they handle up tempo running far better than expected.

FIRST 50 MILES RUN TESTING FEEDBACK

1st run 10 miles – 7:45/mile (road & trail)

Slight rubbing on the inside of the big toe after 8 miles. Despite looking bulky, they had real pace and naturally pushed me quicker than planned.

2nd run 15 miles – 7:25/mile (road & trail)

Loosened the lacing slightly this time and experienced no rubbing at all. Planned easy long run turned progressive. The forefoot rocker made the miles feel effortless.

3rd run 5.5 miles – 7:50/mile (road, rain)

Easy recovery run with excellent grip on wet pavements.

4th run 8 miles – 8:00/mile (road)

Comfortable recovery miles. No hot spots. The more I wore them, the better they felt, they benefit from a short break in period.

5th run 16 miles – 7:20/mile (road with threshold efforts)

Surprisingly strong at faster paces. Not designed as a speed shoe, but they coped well and left my legs feeling protected afterwards with reduced DOMS.

Across all runs, the laces stayed secure, and support remained consistent, even into long efforts.

CONCLUSION

The Nike Vomero Plus is a brilliant high cushion daily trainer that offers more than just comfort. It manages to be soft, protective and stable, while still feeling smooth and responsive.

For marathon training, they’re a superb workhorse in that they handle high mileage, protects tired legs and still feels lively enough for steady and progressive runs.

If you want a trainer that can cover most of your weekly training and keep your legs feeling fresh, the Vomero Plus is an excellent choice.

WOULD I RECOMMEND THEM?

Yes. If you’re a runner who logs regular mileage and wants a shoe that protects your legs without feeling heavy or dull, the Vomero Plus is an excellent choice.

It’s especially well suited to marathon training, where you need a reliable trainer that can handle long runs, tired legs and back to back training days.

What really sets the Vomero Plus apart is how it blends comfort and performance. Many max cushion shoes are great for easy runs but feel flat when you try to pick up the pace. These don’t. They feel smooth and supportive on recovery days, yet still lively enough for steady and progressive runs.

I’d recommend them to:

  • Anyone wanting extra protection for their legs
  • Runners who want one main shoe to cover most training runs
  • A marathon block trainer

They won’t replace a carbon plated race trainer, but as a daily trainer that can do almost everything, the Vomero Plus is a very well rounded trainer.
