Hi, I’m Paul an avid track and field athlete racing at the middle distances 800 and 400 meters. My training consists of running on track, road, grass and trail routes. I am currently building training volume on the track by running short intervals such as 10 x 400 meters with 2 minutes recovery and longer weekend interval runs to build a strong aerobic base.

I am a qualified level 1 UK Athletics coach and have studied gait and pathological biomechanics through a Prosthetics and Orthotics Degree. In my job as an orthotist, I advise people on appropriate footwear secondary to their foot and ankle pathologies or functional deficits.

I have competed on the track and cross-country circuits over the last 20 years.

NIKE WINFLO 10

The Nike Winflo 10 is the preceding model to the now available 11, with the idea of a healthy balance between responsiveness and cushioning. It is a great product for those who are fans of the Pegasus model who do not wish to pay Pegasus pricing.

The specification is geared towards the average recreational runner seeking a neutral shoe with good comfort and a reasonable price tag.

It has been a part of Nike’s product range for some time, with this model incorporating the ‘Nike Air’ cushioning layer designed to give some cushioning with energy return properties within the midsole.

THE HEEL

The internal heel padding is quite minimal in comparison to the Pegasus and other Nike lines but not uncomfortable. Individual preference varies but this shoe gives a good feeling of security at the heel collar.

I have worn these for over 100 miles and experienced none of the following; blisters, excessive heel pistoning (where the heel moves up and down within the back of the shoe) or feeling of insecurity at the back of the shoe.

THE UPPERS

The uppers have a revamped toe box with more room at the forefoot. The material used is Nike’s breathable engineered mesh upper, with extra padding on the tongue and collars compared to the Winflo 9.

The tongue is connected to the upper lining for a better feel internally at the top central column of the foot. Nike report that material overlays at the toe box have added durability; effectively the extra ply at the toe puff has reduced shape change of the toe box that usually happens over time, and accumulating mileage!

Having done so many miles in them I can objectively say they do not feel flimsy and have held up very well. They still feel breathable and lightweight, I am still using them weekly. I have managed to run in them in all conditions and despite the colour change they have not degraded or lost any material integrity.

THE OUTSOLE

The outsole consists of Nike’s multi-patterned tread with varied grip profile with the inspiration being hailed as a ‘rubber waffle’.

After 12 months of usage most of the grip dots have gone but the grip is still not an issue on wet track nights. The sole unit has stood up well to the rigors of grip at high velocity (sub 20 second 150-meter reps) without any feeling of traction loss around the bend.

This shoe has also been great on grass field sessions, but I often change over to my other deeper tread shoes on the grass when it is wet.

THE MIDSOLE

The cushioning (from the Air Cushioning + unit) instantly felt good given the price. I did what many do in a shoe shop and pretended to do various movements (yes, including little jumps) such as squats and an awkward jog across the store, they felt very cushioned under foot.

The heel drop is 10mm which is good for someone like me who ironically runs a lot of high velocity intervals with chronically tight Achilles tendons. Nike’s website terms the shoe as ‘a springy ride for everyday runs’ and I couldn’t put it better.

I must add that they have felt great for the wide repetition range for my intervals, whether it’s a zesty group of 100-meter reps or 6 x 800 meters, I never feel as if they lack responsiveness or lack cushioning.

HOW DO THEY FIT?

This is ultimately subjective. Foot width, high instep and other factors (including preference) factor into shoe fitting.

For me, the Winflo 10 fit true to my size. The toe box and forefoot feel roomy, but again this will inevitably vary. My foot isn’t overly wide or narrow and my arch is of a neutral height.

HOW MUCH DO THEY WEIGH?

If you’ve ever compared your feet to a pair of Thames barges (like me) you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the reasonable weight. US 12 / UK 11 come in at 323 grams per shoe .

IS IT A FULL CARBON PLATE?

There is no carbon plate in the Nike Winflo 10 trainers.

HOW MUCH DO THEY COST?

I bought these from a Nike outlet. As with many runners, I go through shoes quickly and often need several sets a year with differing functions/disciplines.

I purchased them for £52, as soon as I tried them on I liked the way they felt.

CONCLUSION

This model from Nike continues to further their presence as one of the top running shoe manufacturers. This shoe was bought without bias on a good first impression. The average cost of running shoes has risen notably over the last 10 years with the advent of ‘super shoes’.

I believe the advent of super shoes has been great for running in many ways. The Winflo 10 is evidence of the trickle-down effect; advancement and innovation of foam responsiveness and cushioning properties that have allowed shoes like these to perform great without the shock of an extortionate price tag.

They are sturdy, durable and responsive for both track and grass running based on my 12-month training experiences as a (2 minute 800 meter) runner.

WOULD I RECOMMEND THEM?

I was surprised by their responsiveness from the off, without too much compromise on cushioning. This has deteriorated overtime as with any shoe, but after a year I am only now starting to transition a new pair into my running.

These are a great product for any runner marketed at those wanting to spend less than the price tag associated with super shoes, and I believe they are a great all-rounder.

They offer great traction in the wet and good cushioning for those longer reps and road runs. I would likely go to my more cushioned trainers for longer road runs over 6 miles (10km).

My only criticism is I would choose a different colour way next time as the uppers were dyed by the track quite fast.

Without a doubt these shoes were a great find, I would recommend them.
