Hey everyone, my names Chris, I’m 40 years old (just) and training for a 50 mile ultra in the hills. I’ve been running for the last couple of years after being nudged by a mate to join the local run club.

I have recently transitioned from road warrior to full kit Ultra runner (in training), hitting the local trails as much as I can. As part of that metamorphosis I’ve had to take a long hard look at my nutrition and fuelling for both training and the big day out in the hills.

Everyone sweats, some more than others and I’d place myself towards the top end of that scale and say that I’m a decent level sweater. Not excessive, but certainly top tier.

With this in mind, I was on the hunt for an electrolyte product to keep me salty and ensure my performance didn’t take a nose dive whilst out on longer efforts or mid hill repeat.

WHO IS LMNT?

Something that I really liked about LMNT was that they just come across as a decent company, they offer money back if you don’t like the product, the website seems pretty open and transparent when it comes to what’s in their products.

They even go as far to give you step by step instructions on how to mix/make your very own LMNT at home using the core ingredients.

LMNT ELECTROLYTES VARIETY PACK

lmnt electrolytes trial pack

LMNT (element) are one of the big players in that arena and with their “no dodgy ingredients” approach along with a range of flavours that looked tempting I decided to try them out and got myself their variety pack priced at £21.99.

WHATS IN THE PACK

It contains 12 separate sticks (sachets) with 3 each of their most popular flavours;

  • Watermelon Salt
  • Citrus Salt
  • Raspberry Salt
  • Orange Salt

Each stick contains the following;

  • 1000 milligrams of sodium
  • 200 milligrams (mg) of potassium
  • 60 mg of magnesium
  • Citric acid, Natural flavours, Stevia leaf extract and maltodextrin

IS 1000mg A BIT MUCH?

Some may consider 1000mg per serving to be high and when compared to other electrolytes on the market that are typically around 100 - 500mg it does seem high, however LMNT state that there is growing research to suggest that a higher sodium intake (2 - 3 x recommended amount) can be beneficial in certain circumstance, and athletes training hard (yes, I called myself an athlete) is one of those circumstances, particularly heavy / salty sweaters.

HOW TO USE

LMNT recommend that they should be mixed with 16 - 32oz of water - that’s 450 - 900ml for everyone here in the UK. Personally I found that a whole stick in 450ml was way too salty for my liking and 900ml was a bit bland.

I found the sweet spot to be about one stick per 750ml which worked out perfectly as the bladder on my pack is 1.5L so 2 sticks mixed perfectly to support me over my longest training runs, I would carry plain water split between 2 soft flasks up front and then 1.5l mixed in the bladder.

Mixing is spot on, each stick contains a fine powder that mixes almost instantly and not once did I find that the last mouthful was stronger than the rest or contained any gritty remnants of non mixed product.

Of the flavours that came in my variety pack my favourite was the Watermelon, but to be honest, they were all good and I’d happily use any of them.

PERFORMANCE ON LONG RUNS

Since introducing LMNT into my fuelling routine, I’ve noticed a clear difference in how I feel on longer efforts. Fewer dips in energy, reduced post-run fatigue, and better hydration overall. I

t’s helped me stay sharper mentally on those solo hours out on the trails, and I’m not finishing as drained as I used to.

I’ve even started drinking them during the day, especially after warmer runs or tough sessions and I’ve genuinely felt more energised and recovered the next morning.

HOW MUCH DO LMNT ELECTROLYTES COST?

  • 12 stick Variety Pack: £21.99 (£1.83 per stick)
  • 30 pack of 1 flavour: £44.99 (£1.49 per stick)

CONLUSION

I not only used LMNT to support my training runs but I also used them through out the day.

Having never supplemented with electrolytes in the past, I can genuinely say they will continue to be a part of my daily routine along with being a staple of my training block and race day for my 50 miler.

I felt an increase in energy throughout the day, I woke up feeling refreshed and even with the increased mileage that I am now doing I have felt surprisingly good.

If you’re a high-sweater, endurance athlete, or just looking to tighten up your fuelling game, LMNT is well worth a try.
