As someone who is currently training for a 50 miler I’ve tried more than my share of energy gels. Through that process I have come to settle on Maurten’s Gel 100 and its caffeinated sibling, the CAF 100.
They stand out not just for what they do, but for what they don’t do: no crashes, no, sticky mouth, no stomach issues and no unnecessary fuss. Just consistent quality and energy, delivered in a way that ensures you perform.
WHO IS MAURTEN?
Maurten is a Swedish sports nutrition brand renowned for its innovative hydrogel technology, which has revolutionised energy gels and drink mixes.
Their products are widely used by elite athletes, including marathoners and triathletes, who rely on Maurten’s solutions for both training and race day.
CONSISTENCY

This is where Maurten really sets itself apart. The gel has a smooth, hydrogel texture — more like a jelly than a traditional syrupy gel. It doesn’t drip or stick to your teeth, and you don’t need to chase it with water.
It’s firm enough to hold its shape but soft enough to go down easily, even when you’re breathing hard or battling fatigue. It can pretty much be swallowed whole, or taken in 2/3 sections if preferred.
It might sound like a small thing, but how a gel feels in the mouth matters. These don’t coat your teeth or leave a weird aftertaste.
They’re light, smooth, and easy to swallow, even when your body’s under strain. That hydrogel format makes them more palatable than most, especially in hot conditions.
FLAVOUR
Maurten has gone for minimalism here. The standard Gel 100 has a mildly sweet, neutral, almost flavourless profile, while the CAF 100 adds just the faintest hint of bitterness from the caffeine.
What I disliked about some of the other Gels that I tested was the over sweetness, Maurten keeps it clean and subtle.
NO STOMACH ISSUES
This is the biggest win for me. I’ve used both the standard and caffeinated versions on everything from fasted tempo runs to long trail efforts with a fair bit of elevation.
No cramps, no nausea, no emergency toilet stops. Maurten’s science backed hydrogel tech seems to deliver on its promise of smooth digestion and fast energy uptake.
CAFFINE BOOST
The CAF 100 gives you 100mg of caffeine in a single, compact dose. Whilst training for my ultra I am also juggling a full time job and two toddlers, so the Caff 100 has become my go-to for early morning long runs or the final third of a race when I have needed that extra boost.
The energy lift feels clean and noticeable without the jitters or crash. It’s not just about physical performance, it helps me stay focused and alert when fatigue hits.
HANDY ALL IN ONE PACKAGE
No need to mix powders or second-guess how much to take, each gel delivers a predictable, measured dose of carbs (40g per sachet) and, in the CAF version, 100 mg caffeine too. The packaging is slim, durable, and easy to open on the move.
COST

When ever I mention Maurten products to fellow runners the first thing they tend to comment on is the price, so lets start with that and address the elephant in the room.
These aren’t budget gels. You’re looking at around £2.85 per sachet for the Gel 100 and £3.35 per gel if you want the caffeinated version.
This does add up fast over long training blocks. But for me, the cost is justified by what you get: a product that simply works, reliably, every time.
There’s no need to mix, shake, or worry about ratios and I’ll happily pay a bit more to avoid mid-race stomach issues or falling apart at mile 18.
CONCLUSION

Maurten Gel 100 and CAF 100 have become staples in my training and racing, especially for key sessions where performance and gut comfort are non-negotiable.
Yes, they cost more than most gels, but for me, the reliability, simplicity, and stomach-friendly formula are worth every penny.
If you’re serious about performance and want fuelling you don’t have to think twice about, these are hard to beat.
