When we visited Sweden earlier this year to do the Haga parkrun in Stockholm, we also took the opportunity to do a floating sauna experience. The lake at the time was frozen and our host had to cut a hole in the lake for us to jump in. This was our first taste of ice baths and it felt better than I was expecting!

As runners, we're always on the lookout for effective recovery tools, and the Pulsio ICE bath has certainly made waves in the running community.

After putting it through its paces, I'm ready to share my thoughts on this cold therapy solution.

TEMPERATURE CONTROL

One of the standout features of the Pulsio ICE is its impressive cold retention capabilities. The insulation keeps the water at your desired temperature for extended periods, ensuring each dip is as effective as the last.

This is particularly useful for those long Sunday runs when you might want multiple cold therapy sessions throughout the day.

RECOVERY BENEFITS

Cold water immersion has been shown to help reduce muscle soreness and inflammation, particularly after running-based exercises.

Many users, including myself, have noticed quicker recovery times and reduced delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) after incorporating the Pulsio ICE into their post-run routines.

COMFORT AND SAFETY

The Pulsio ICE features a non-slip interior, providing a secure footing when entering and exiting the bath.

The edges are smooth, preventing any uncomfortable pressure points during your soak.

There is not a seat inside but it is really comfortable to sit on the floor of the ice bath.

SIZE OPTIONS

Pulsio offers one size fits all.

I am 6 foot and 100kg and fitted perfectly fine in the ice bath. Once you are in there is plenty of room to submerge your shoulders.

WHAT IS INCLUDED WITH THE PULSIO ICE BATH?

The PULSIO Ice Bath includes:

  • 1 x PULSIO ice bath.
  • 1 x PULSIO ice bath lid.
  • 6 x Support stands.
  • 1 x Easy inflation pump.
  • 1 x Drain hose.
  • 1 x Manual.

The box is not as big as I thought it would be. I had visions of this massive box turning up. On arrival the ice bath and all the parts is folded up neatly into a box that is only 70cm long.

Be careful not to lose the rubber seals when you open up the plastic containing the support stands and drain hose.

It does not come with a thermometer, but you can buy one with your ice bath for £12.99. This allows you to monitor the water temperature accurately.

This is crucial for maintaining the optimal cold therapy range of around 15°C, as recommended by sports physiotherapists.

SETTING UP YOUR ICE BATH

Setting up the Pulsio ICE is straightforward, and the drain system makes emptying a breeze.

Here are a few tips to get you started.

SUPPORT STANDS

pulsio ice bath support stands

Unfold your ice bath and turn it upside down. Insert your 6 support stands in the slots. This will give your ice bath some structure.

INFLATABLE RING

pulsio ice bath inflatable ring

Turn it back upright. Inflate the top ring using the hand pump provided. You need to put the first valve in before trying to inflate the ring. Then pump into the first valve as it has a non return valve that will stop the air from coming out.

It took me a while to figure this out and could not figure out why I could not pump it up without the air coming out before I could get the pump out and put the valve in!

DRAINAGE HOSE

Connect the drainage valve and hose on the outside of the ice bath. This is near the bottom.

Put the rubber seals on before connecting the valve and remember to check the valve is closed before filling it up for the first time.

FILL IT UP

Fill your ice bath up with clean cold water. Fill it up to approximately 20cm from the top. That is roughly just over half way. This took around 15 minutes to fill. Once you get in and submerge yourself the water will come up to the top.

The first time I used it I added 2 x 1kg packs of ice cubes thinking that would be plenty but 1 x 5kg pack of ice cubes works best.

SECURE WITH LID

When you have finished using your ice bath. Place the lid over the top to keep the water clean.

HOW MUCH IS THE PULSIO ICE BATH?

The PULSIO ice bath costs £54.00 at the moment! That’s £70.99 off the whole value of £124.99.
